Refresher Courses are sessions captured at past RSNA Annual Meetings focusing on themes of health care reform, payment models, research and innovation, patient-centered radiology, and advances in the different imaging modalities. Refresher Courses are targeted to diagnostic, interventional and oncologic radiologists and are designed to improve knowledge and competence in responding to the challenges and advancements in the field of radiology.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the range of technologies and clinical applications of cone-beam CT in image-guided interventions (including surgery, interventional radiology, and image-guided radiation therapy) and specialty diagnostic imaging (such as breast imaging and orthopaedic / musculoskeletal imaging).
• Discuss the diversity of cone-beam CT imaging systems for image-guided interventions, including fixed-room and mobile C-arms, O-arms, and new embodiments.
• Review the image quality challenges in cone-beam CT, including image noise and artifacts.
• Identify the methods being developed to address such challenges, including new detector types and 3D image reconstruction algorithms.
• Identify the systems and methods being developed to further improve spatial resolution in cone-beam CT, offering to extend imaging performance for applications such as breast imaging (detection of microcalcifications) and orthopaedic imaging (visualization / quantification of fine skeletal detail).
• Recognize the methods by which cone-beam CT can give quantitative measures of pathophysiology, including quantitative imaging metrics related to musculoskeletal health in high-resolution orthopaedics imaging.
• Explain the technology of musculoskeletal (MSK) cone-beam CT (CBCT).
• Identify key differences between MSK CBCT and other orthopedic imaging modalities.
• Discuss emerging clinical applications of MSK CBCT.
• Relate the overall design and use of a dedicated breast CT scanner.
• Demonstrate the performance of the scanner as assessed using mathematical observers and other quantitative metrics.
• Demonstrate the performance of the scanner based upon radiologist-observer studies.
