This series of modules and panel discussions equips radiology educators and program leaders with practical strategies and comprehensive guidance for preparing residents for the upcoming ABR Diagnostic Radiology Oral Exam, launching in 2028. Through lectures, interactive activities, and supplementary resources, participants learn about the exam's structure and rationale, approaches to competency-based assessment and clinical reasoning, integration of oral exam preparation within residency curricula, creation of internal teaching archives, and best practices for teaching observation, communication, and critical thinking. The content also covers assessment tools, technology-enhanced learning, and learner-centered teaching techniques, offering actionable insights and examples to enhance board exam readiness and real-world radiologic decision-making.

Beyond the Boards Module 1: Understanding the New Diagnostic Radiology Oral Exam (2025)
This foundational module introduces radiology educators to the structure, rationale, and implementation of the new Diagnostic Radiology Oral Exam, launching in 2028. Designed in response to evolving clinical practice and stakeholder feedback, the exam marks a significant shift from the previous format, reintroducing oral assessment to better reflect real-world radiologic decision-making. Through two engaging lectures by Dr. Desiree Morgan, MD, and Dr. Katherine E. Maturen, MD, along with supplementary resources, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the exam’s structure, rationale, and implementation.

Learning Objectives:
- Explain the rationale and stakeholder-driven process behind the reintroduction of the oral certifying exam in diagnostic radiology.
- Describe the structure, logistics, and standardized format of the new remote oral exam, including its seven core categories.
- Recognize how the new oral exam assesses critical competencies—such as communication, synthesis, and management decisions—that are difficult to evaluate via computer-based testing.
- Access and apply ABR resources (e.g., sample cases, mock exams, FAQs) to support curriculum planning and resident preparation.

This module is the second in a series about how radiology educators can modify their residency training to prepare radiology students for the returning ABR Diagnostic Radiology Oral Exam that will be launched in 2028. In this module, from lectures presented by Dr. Agatha Stanek, MD, FRCPC, Dr. Allison Grayev, MD, Dr. Vinay Prabhu, MD, MS, and Dr. Matthew Young, DO, along with interactive activities and supplementary resources, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of strategies for integrating oral exam preparation into existing curricula, approaches to aligning your residency training with exam objectives, and implementing methods for building an internal teaching file and archive that can be used in board exam preparation.

In this module, from lectures presented by Dr. Francis Deng, MD, Dr. Shanna Matalon, MD, Dr. Paul Bunch, MD, MS, and Dr. Roger Bartolotta, MD, along with supplementary resources, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of best practices for teaching observation, communication, and critical thinking skills into trainee education; assessment tools to evaluate residents progress in their preparedness for the oral board exam; technology and online resources to enhance learning experiences; and learner-centered teaching techniques to improve the effectiveness of workstation teaching.
