Imaging the Professional Athlete (2026)
Description

Discover how musculoskeletal imaging informs high-stakes decisions in professional sports. This case-based webinar uses didactic lecture to explore the critical role radiologists play in evaluating pre‑signing injuries, recognizing joint pathology and guiding return‑to‑play decisions. With focused insight into professional soccer and baseball, you’ll examine adaptive changes and remodeling of the elbow and glenohumeral joints and learn how imaging directly influences transfer outcomes. Real‑world cases and characteristic examples reinforce how imaging supports confident, informed decision making in professional sports.

Hollis G. Potter, MD

Hollis G. Potter, MD, is chair of the Department of Radiology and Imaging, holds the Coleman Chair in MRI Research at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), and is professor of radiology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Dr. Potter established the HSS MRI laboratory in 2008, which has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2007. She received her bachelor’s degree from Smith College and her doctorate from New York Medical College. The author of over 300 peer-reviewed articles and 70 chapters, Dr. Potter’s prior and current research interests involve the use of quantitative MR imaging as a biomarker for assessing depletion of tissue matrix in addition to the reduction of susceptibility artifact around orthopedic hardware. She has been the co-recipient and recipient of numerous research awards, including the Gold Medal Award from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from HSS. Additionally, Dr. Potter is a co-founder of Imagen Technologies, a company that uses AI to interpret diagnostic images.

Content Areas (Codes):
The following Content Areas will be printed on the certificate for this course:

  • Musculoskeletal Radiology

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the adaptive remodeling of the elbow and glenohumeral joints and the joint forces generated in professional and amateur baseball.
  • Recognize imaging findings that may carry a higher risk of progression or instability and understand their potential implications for transfer/signing decision making in professional soccer players.
  • Evaluate the value of pre-signing MRI as a baseline study for longitudinal comparison in the event of future symptoms.
  • Review atypical muscle injuries associated with baseball and the importance of imaging and diagnosing these injuries.
